At area control  centers air traffic controllers work at Radar- and  Coordinator working  positions responsible for a defined area (sector) within the controlled  airspace  of jurisdiction.

The Radar Controller shall provide radar service to aircraft under control as far as these are within controlled airspace:

Radar Controller

 In particular personnel shall

  • identify aircraft and maintain identification by monitoring the flight of  aircraft within controlled airspace.
  • vector aircraft in controlled airspace to provice separation or navigational  assistance.issue  clearances and istructions to ensure that radar separation minima  are not  infringed in controlled airspace at any time.
  • issue  clearances and instructions to ensure that radar separation minima are not  infringed in controlled airspace at any time and mark clearances and instructions  on control strips.
  • issue  information to aircraft concerning unkown targets and adverse weather areas when deemed necessary and workload permits.
  • Vector aircraft  clear of such areas if requestedby aircraft.
  • perform  flight information and alerting service in the own area of  jurisdiction.

When  conducting air traffic control the radar controller has the decisive authority agains the delegated coordinator controller.

The Coordinator  control function comprises the handling of all coordination duties between  different control units and own sectors for the entire air traffic of the appropriate radar postion.

In particular personnel shall

  • obtain  and forward information necessary for the orderly performance of air traffic control service.
  • issue  entry clearance to adjoining control units.
  • perform  and receive radar-hand-offs to/from adjoining sectors or control  units.
  • establish and maintain an actual traffic picture and, if necessary, advise the  radar controller on infringements of separation.
Coordinator
